How to Create Gorgeous Painted Terra Cotta Pots
I was recently asked by a major home improvement supplier to create some a display for them using the craft items they had started carrying. The purpose being to inspire the customer, and of course for them to buy and use their products. In addition to spray paint, spray stain, wooden crates and spray chalk paint there were terra cotta pots. This is where I would start.
For the first project I used some clay pots, rubber bands and spray paint. I have seen this done before but have never tried it. It seemed like it would be an easy and quick project. The first step was to turn the pots upside on a piece of cardboard so I could spray my base coat.
I wanted white to be showing through once the pot was painted completely so I sprayed two light coats of Krylon Gloss White spray paint letting them dry completely between each coat, only about 15 minutes. The next step was to place the rubber bans around each pot. They need to be played with a bit so they aren’t in a straight line ( this was a bit tough on the small ones) and they must also be lying flat. Once they are where you want them, chose your desired top coat color and spray over them. On the pots with a white base I sprayed over them with silver. Some were sprayed with a gold base which were top coated with white. Make sure you get good coverage on the top layer. It will take multiple light coats.
Once your pots are completely dry, remove the rubber bands and you will have a gorgeous pot for plants or whatever you desire. My white ones will be getting plants and the silver is getting pine cones.
You can see along the upper edge I was not as careful as I should have been.
I am happy with how this one turned out.
You may also need to smooth down the edges with your hands where the edge of the rubber bands were. They are still soft and easily fold down.
This was my first one, it had a white base with black gloss top coat and still my favorite.’
